Lěngyǎn Guān 冷眼觀

Observations with a Cold Eye

by 王浚卿 (撰)

About the work

Lěngyǎn Guān 冷眼觀 is a thirty-huí 回 vernacular novel by Wáng Jùnqīng 王浚卿, a late-Qīng social fiction that surveys a wide range of corrupt and degraded contemporary types through an ironic, satirical eye. The title evokes the stance of a detached, clear-sighted observer (lěngyǎn 冷眼, “cold eye”) surveying the chaos of society. The novel belongs to the genre of late-Qīng social fiction (shèhuì xiǎoshuō 社會小說) that emerged in the decade before the fall of the dynasty, depicting bureaucratic venality, gentry decline, manipulation of the legal system, and the moral bankruptcy of the educated classes.

Abstract

Lěngyǎn Guān 冷眼觀 is attributed in all editions to Wáng Jùnqīng 王浚卿, about whom biographical details are sparse. The CBDB does not contain a matching entry for this name at the dates consistent with a late-Qīng authorship. The novel is listed in the standard catalog of late-Qīng popular fiction (Zhōngguó tōngsú xiǎoshuō zǒngmù tíyào 中國通俗小說總目提要) and is grouped with other “social novels” of the Guangxu–Xuantong era. The text surveyed in the Kanripo corpus runs to 30 huí; a table of contents precedes chapter 1. The chapter headings indicate a broad social panorama: corrupt yamen clerks, licentious officials, corrupt merchants, failed examination candidates, and the chaotic upheaval of the last years of Qīng rule.

The Kanripo text, which names the author as Wáng Jùnqīng 王浚卿, conforms with the standard scholarly attribution. On dating: the novel appears to have been composed and first published in the late Guangxu to Xuantong era (c. 1905–10), placing it in the same literary generation as Guānchǎng Xiànxíng Jì 官場現形記 and Èr Shí Nián Mùdǔ Zhī Guài Xiànzhuàng 二十年目睹之怪現狀. The chapter headings in the Kanripo text begin with “讀奇書舊事覺新民” (Hui 1), and the plot involves an array of bureaucratic and social types characteristic of the qiǎnzé xiǎoshuō 譴責小說 (denunciation fiction) genre.
