The author Yānxiá Yìshì 煙霞逸士 is known only from this pen name; the real identity is unestablished. The pen name does not appear in CBDB or other standard reference tools. It is distinct from the slightly similar pen name Yānxiá Sǎnrén 煙霞散人, which belongs to a different author (the Fēng yuè mèng 風月夢 novelist). The date of composition is unknown; the novel is conventionally placed within the Qīng dynasty, probably in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, on the basis of its genre conventions. No dated preface or external bibliographic reference has been found.
The 15-chapter format is shorter than the standard cáizǐ jiārén novel (which typically runs to 20 chapters) and may suggest a shorter or incomplete text, or may reflect the author’s deliberate choice of a compressed narrative arc. The title Qiǎo Liánzhū may refer specifically to the wit (qiǎo 巧) required in the paired couplet-exchanges (liánzhū 聯珠) that are a standard set-piece in cáizǐ jiārén fiction, where hero and heroine demonstrate their mutual compatibility through linked poetic compositions.
