Abstract
Shì Wú Pǐ is a Qīng-dynasty world-of-sentiment novel organized around the theme of ēnyuàn 恩怨 (gratitude and resentment). The opening poem frames its central moral: “Repay kindness with kindness, repay injustice with uprightness — only this makes a true man. Although one does not seek repayment, one must not forget kindness or resentment.” The novel then demonstrates these precepts through a gallery of types: the loyal friend who rescues another in poverty; the ungrateful scoundrel who betrays his benefactor; the upright magistrate; and the corrupt official who eventually receives his deserts.
The four juàn structure — Wind, Flower, Snow, Moon — follows a convention seen in other popular Qīng fiction collections and does not imply four separate storylines; rather, the 16 chapters form a continuous narrative. The story moves through multiple social settings — county towns, courts, inns, markets, and private households — in what appears to be a northern setting (Línqīng 臨清 and Dàtóng 大同 are mentioned as locations).
The author’s pen name Échuan Zhǔrén 娥川主人 has not been identified; no CBDB entry exists. The work is undated; based on style and conventions, a mid-to-late Qīng date seems probable, but a Qiánlóng-period (1736–1795) composition cannot be ruled out. No external catalog reference has been located to fix the date more precisely.
