Xīcháo Xīnyǔ 熙朝新語
New Conversations from the Brilliant Dynasty by 徐錫齡 (撰), 錢泳 (續撰)
About the work
Xīcháo Xīnyǔ 熙朝新語 is a bǐjì 筆記 (miscellany) in 16 juàn compiled in the Qīng dynasty. The work records court regulations and precedents, anecdotes about notable officials and literary figures, and local customs and conditions (fēngtǔ rénqíng 風土人情) spanning the early Qīng through the Jiāqìng reign (ca. 1644–1818). It was published in 1818 under the pseudonym Gǔ Shè Yú Jīndéshuǐ 古歙余金德水, a composite pen name formed from the surnames of its two compilers.

Abstract
The Xīcháo Xīnyǔ was compiled through a collaboration between 徐錫齡 Xú Xílíng (also known as Xú Hòuqīng 徐厚卿; dates uncertain, CBDB id 612349, no lifedates recorded) and 錢泳 Qián Yǒng (1759–1844, CBDB id 86413). According to Qián Yǒng’s own preface to his Lǚyuán Cónghuà 履園叢話, he “once co-compiled the Xīcháo Xīnyǔ in 16 volumes with his friend Xú Hòuqīng, and it had already been circulated in the world.” The composite pseudonym Yú Jīn 余金 was formed by combining half of each surname: Xú 徐 contributed jīn 金 (the bottom component) and Qián 錢 contributed yú 余 (a phonetic variant). Tradition holds that Xú died without leaving an independent corpus of writings, so Qián placed Xú’s name prominently on the manuscript as an act of friendship. Later Republican-era editions in Bǐjì Xiǎoshuō Dàguān 筆記小說大觀 and Qīngdài Bǐjì Cóngkān 清代筆記叢刊 list the authorship as “Xú Xílíng and Qián Yǒng, co-compiled” — the form followed by the Kanripo text.
The catalog entry gives the CBDB birth-year 1759 and death-year 1844 for Qián Yǒng, consistent with the Qīngdài Rénwù Shēngzú Niánbiǎo 清代人物生卒年表. No lifedates are recorded in CBDB for Xú Xílíng; the research note that he is from Wúxī and fl. around the Qiánlóng period (1736–1796) is derived from Qián Yǒng’s memoir, but cannot be confirmed from the CBDB entry.
The 16 juàn draw heavily on earlier Qīng bǐjì — particularly the writings of Wáng Shìzhēn 王士禎 and Yuán Méi 袁枚 — as well as Jiǎng Liángqí’s Dōnghuá Lù 蔣良騏《東華錄》, Lǐ Diàoyuán’s Dànmò Lù 李調元《淡墨錄》, and Lǐ’s Hèzhēng Lù 《鶴徵錄》. The compilers acknowledge relying on a wide range of secondary sources for the bulk of entries, with only a small portion based on first-hand observation. The text opens (卷一) with an account of the legendary founding of the Manchu house at Cháng Bái Shān 長白山, followed by entries on the Qīng founding statesmen, and proceeds chronologically through the reigns to document official culture, examination anecdotes, literary episodes, local customs, natural wonders, and unusual phenomena.
The work belongs to the prolific Qīng shǐliào bǐjì 史料性筆記 tradition, valued for preserving details of official life and cultural milieu not found in formal dynastic histories. The Míngshèngtáng 鳴盛堂 block-print edition of 1818 (Jiāqìng 23rd year) is the standard text; a modern punctuated edition was published by Shànghǎi Gǔjí Chūbǎnshè in 1989.
