About the work

Jiànwǔ Qǐjūzhù 建武起居注 (also titled Jìn Jiànwǔ Qǐjūzhù 晉建武起居注) is a jíyìběn reconstruction of the court diary from the brief Jiànwǔ 建武 era (317–318 CE) of the Eastern Jin — the founding reign of Emperor Yuán 元帝 after the court’s flight south. Only a single fragment survives.

Abstract

The sole surviving fragment records a ritual detail: when establishing the Jìng Hòu 敬后 temple, the mats used for offerings did not employ green-trimmed borders. This fragment was preserved in the Tàipíng Yùlǎn 太平御覽, juan 709. Court diaries during the early Eastern Jin were recorded under very difficult conditions — the dynasty was newly established south of the Yangtze after the fall of Luòyáng 洛陽 in 311 CE, and many court records from the Western Jin had been destroyed. The Jiànwǔ era lasted only from the 3rd month of 317 to the 3rd month of 318, when it was changed to Dàxīng 大興.
