Abstract

The Yǒnghé era was one of the more stable periods of the Eastern Jin, notable for the literary gathering at the Orchid Pavilion (Lántíng 蘭亭) in 353 CE. The two surviving fragments are modest: an imperial edict stating that the court astrologer-herald’s non-sacrificial music could employ the pipa and konghou (preserved in the Báitiě 白帖 encyclopedia, though the text is noted as corrupt); and a report from Lújiāng 廬江太守 Lù Yǒng 路永 of a gold seal-like object discovered on the bank of the Gǔchéng 穀城 river, gleaming with purple-red light (preserved in the Chūxué Jì 初學記 and the Tàipíng Yùlǎn 太平御覽).
