About the work
Gǔwén Suǒyǔ 古文瑣語 is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a lost pre-Qín collection of historical anecdotes, supernatural tales, dreams, and prodigies. The text is also referred to as Suǒyǔ 璅語 (“Trifling Sayings”) in some early citations. It belongs to the genre of early Chinese “minor tales” (xiǎoshuō 小說) that the Hàn Shū 漢書 bibliography classified under the “school of small talk” (小說家). The reconstruction contains fifteen fragmentary anecdotes preserved in Táng and Sòng encyclopedias.

Abstract
The Gǔwén Suǒyǔ was a Warring States or early Hàn compilation of random historical anecdotes involving figures from the Shāng 商, Western Zhōu 西周, and Chūnqiū 春秋 periods. The fragments cover: Yī Yǐn 伊尹’s seizure of power after the death of Zhòng Rén 仲壬; Queen Jiāng 姜后 of King Xuān of Zhōu 周宣王 remonstrating with her husband to reform his lax conduct; an ominous premature birth in King Xuān’s household, debated by Zhòngshān Fǔ 仲山父; the fall of King Yōu 幽王 and a tiger that submitted to a prince; a series of supernatural episodes involving Shī Kuàng 師曠 the blind musician of Jìn 晉, Duke Píng of Jìn 晉平公, and Zǐchǎn 子產 of Zhèng 鄭; a dream of Pángēng 盤庚 and Yī Yǐn warning Duke Jǐng of Qí 齊景公 against invading Sòng 宋; the prophecy of Xíng Shǐ Zǐchén 刑史子臣 concerning Duke Jǐng of Sòng 宋景公 and the fall of Wú 吳; a strange tale of the birth of Xún Línfù 荀林父; the dreams of Zhì Bó 智伯; and a thief’s eloquent defense before Jì Kāngzǐ 季康子 of Lǔ 魯, arguing that political usurpers are the true thieves. Sources include the Tàipíng Yùlǎn 太平御覽, Yìwén Lèijù 藝文類聚, Běitáng Shūchāo 北堂書鈔, Tàipíng Guǎngjì 太平廣記, and the Lù Shǐ 路史.
The Hàn Shū bibliographic treatise lists a Suǒyǔ (attributed to 虞初 or another Hàn author) under the anecdote (xiǎoshuō) category, and early commentators cite it as a source of ancient lore. The text was lost after the Táng; fragments were collected in the Qīng period jíyìběn compilations.
