Jìn Zhūgōng Biézhuàn 晉諸公別傳

Alternative Biographies of Jin Lords anonymous

About the work

Jìn Zhūgōng Biézhuàn 晉諸公別傳 is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a collection of alternative or supplementary biographies (biézhuàn 別傳) of notable figures of the Jin dynasty. Biézhuàn were a distinct genre of early medieval biographical writing — unofficial, often anecdotal accounts that supplemented the formal biographies (lièzhuàn 列傳) in standard histories. The reconstruction assembles biographical fragments concerning dozens of Jin officials, military figures, and literati, each accompanied by the source of citation.

Abstract

The biézhuàn genre flourished during the Wei, Jin, and Southern Dynasties period, coinciding with the rise of character appraisal (rénwù pǐnzǎo 人物品藻) and the Shìshuō Xīnyǔ 世說新語 culture of personality lore. A biézhuàn typically preserved anecdotes, speech, and personal details not found in the formal dynastic histories. The present collection opens with the biography of Wáng Xiáng 王祥 (185–269 CE), the paragon of filial piety whose lack of joy at the Jin accession ceremony prompted contemporary criticism; the biographical fragments proceed alphabetically or by rank through dozens of Jin notables, including statesmen, generals, and recluses. Each fragment is sourced from Táng and Sòng citations, principally the Tàipíng Yùlǎn 太平御覽, Shìshuō Xīnyǔ 世說新語 commentary, and Yìwén Lèijù 藝文類聚.

The original compilation, if it was a single work, was lost after the Táng. The jíyìběn represents a Qīng-period reconstruction from scattered citations.
