Jìn Sì Wáng Yíshì 晉四王遺事

Remaining Affairs of Four Princes of Jin by 盧綝

About the work

Jìn Sì Wáng Yíshì 晉四王遺事 (also titled Lú Chēn Jìn Sì Wáng Yíshì 盧綝晉四王遺事) is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a companion volume to 盧綝’s Jìn Bā Wáng Gùshì 晉八王故事 (KR4k0368). While the Bā Wáng Gùshì covered all eight princely factions of the civil war (291–306 CE), this slimmer volume focused on four of the princes, recording additional anecdotes not included in the main collection.

Abstract

The Suí Shū 隋書 bibliography records the Jìn Sì Wáng Yíshì in 4 juǎn. The term yíshì 遺事 (“remaining affairs” or “leftover matters”) suggests supplementary material — anecdotes that were gathered after the Bā Wáng Gùshì was compiled or that did not fit its organizational scheme. Which four princes it covered is not certain from the surviving fragments, but they were likely the principals in the most destructive phase of the conflict (Sīmǎ Lún, Sīmǎ Jiǒng, Sīmǎ Yǐng, and Sīmǎ Yuè — or a closely related set). Lú Chēn’s two collections are among the closest contemporary sources for the War of the Eight Princes, and their loss was a significant one for the historiography of early medieval China.
