Yàn Shū 燕書
Book of Yan by 范亨
About the work
Yàn Shū 燕書 (also titled Fàn Hēng Yàn Shū 范亨燕書) is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a history of the Yàn 燕 states (Qián Yàn 前燕, Hòu Yàn 後燕, and possibly Nán Yàn 南燕) of the Sixteen Kingdoms period, compiled by Fàn Hēng 范亨, an official under the Hòu Yàn 後燕 regime. The reconstructed fragments run to over 1200 lines, making it one of the more substantial of the Sixteen Kingdoms jíyìběn histories.

Abstract
The Murong 慕容 clan of the Xiānbēi 鮮卑 founded a series of Yàn states in the northeast: Qián Yàn (Former Yàn, 337–370), Hòu Yàn (Later Yàn, 384–407), and Nán Yàn (Southern Yàn, 398–410). Fàn Hēng’s Yàn Shū was a contemporary history of this Murong enterprise, recorded in the Suí Shū 隋書 bibliography in 20 juǎn. The author served the Hòu Yàn regime and had access to court records.
The jíyìběn preserves substantial material on the Murong rulers’ military campaigns, administrative structure, and interactions with the Eastern Jin and other Sixteen Kingdoms. Much of the content covers the height of Yàn power under Murong Jùn 慕容儁 (Qián Yàn) and Murong Chuí 慕容垂 (Hòu Yàn), including the intricate diplomacy and warfare that characterized the fifth-century “barbarian-Han” frontiers. Citations are drawn from the standard Táng-Sòng encyclopedic and commentary sources. The text was lost after the Táng.
