Abstract
Gāo Lǘ was a prominent Northern Wei official and writer, a native of Yúyáng 漁陽 who served under several Northern Wei emperors. He compiled the Yàn Zhì as a record of the Mùróng 慕容 clan’s Yàn states, which the Northern Wei had destroyed and absorbed. The Suí Shū 隋書 bibliography records the Yàn Zhì in 10 juǎn. Gāo Lǘ wrote from the perspective of the conquering power — the Northern Wei regarded the Mùróng enterprise as a predecessor that they had legitimately superseded. The surviving fragments, drawn from Táng-Sòng citations, preserve only a few lines. The text was lost after the Táng.
