Nán Yàn Shū 南燕書 (Wáng Jǐnghuī)

Book of Southern Yan, by Wang Jinghui by 王景暉

About the work

Nán Yàn Shū 南燕書 by Wáng Jǐnghuī 王景暉 is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a lost history of the Nán Yàn 南燕 state (398–410 CE), a companion or alternative to the account by Zhāng Quán 張詮 (KR4k0382). The surviving fragments are extremely meager — only a few lines.

Abstract

Wáng Jǐnghuī is otherwise unknown. The Suí Shū 隋書 bibliography records a Nán Yàn Shū in 5 juǎn attributed to him (the same length as Zhāng Quán’s work, suggesting they may have been the same text or complementary accounts). The surviving fragments are too limited to distinguish his version from Zhāng Quán’s. Both texts were lost after the Táng and exist only in the scattered citations assembled by Qīng ji yi ben scholars. The tiny surviving remnant testifies to how completely the short-lived Nán Yàn state’s own historiographical tradition was erased.
