Chángshā Qíjiù Zhuàn 長沙耆舊傳

Biographies of Elders of Changsha anonymous

About the work

Chángshā Qíjiù Zhuàn 長沙耆舊傳 is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a lost local biographical collection recording notable elders (qíjiù 耆舊) of Chángshā 長沙 (in modern Húnán). The qíjiù zhuàn 耆舊傳 genre flourished in the Hàn, Wei, and Jin periods as a form of regional pride — each commandery or prefecture might compile biographies of its local worthies.

Abstract

Chángshā was a major southern commandery with a rich history dating to the Warring States period. The qíjiù zhuàn genre recorded the exemplary conduct, official careers, and notable sayings of local figures, serving both as a record for posterity and as a moral guide for the living. The Suí Shū 隋書 bibliography records a Chángshā Qíjiù Zhuàn. The surviving fragments are extremely few — a couple of brief biographical notices — recovered from Táng and Sòng citations. The text was lost after the Táng.
