Yìdū Qíjiù Zhuàn 益都耆舊傳

Biographies of Elders of Yidu anonymous

About the work

Yìdū Qíjiù Zhuàn 益都耆舊傳 is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a lost local biographical collection recording notable elders of Yìzhōu 益州 (the ancient name for the Sìchuān basin, with its capital at Chéngdū 成都). The qíjiù zhuàn 耆舊傳 genre was particularly well-developed in the Sìchuān region, which had a strong local historiographical tradition.

Abstract

Yìzhōu / Yìdū was one of the most culturally distinctive regions of the Hàn empire, home to famous literary figures such as Sīmǎ Xiàngrú 司馬相如 and Yáng Xióng 揚雄. The Yìdū Qíjiù Zhuàn was part of a broader Shǔ 蜀 local historiographical tradition that included Cháng Qú’s 常璩 Huáyáng Guó Zhì 華陽國志 and Chén Shòu’s 陳壽 Yìbù Qíjiù Zhuàn 益部耆舊傳 (a separate, fuller work recorded in the Suí Shū). The surviving fragments are very few — brief notices of local officials and scholars — recovered from Táng and Sòng citations.
