Xiàozǐ Zhuàn 孝子傳 (Yú Pányòu)

Biographies of Filial Sons, by Yu Panyou by 虞盤佑

About the work

Xiàozǐ Zhuàn 孝子傳 by Yú Pányòu 虞盤佑 is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a minor lost collection of filial son biographies. The surviving fragments are very few — about 50 lines — representing a separate compilation from the larger and better-known xiàozǐ zhuàn collections in this division.

Abstract

Yú Pányòu’s name (sometimes written 虞盤佑 or 虞般佑) appears in the Suí Shū 隋書 bibliography as the author of a Xiàozǐ Zhuàn. He was likely a Jin-dynasty figure from the prominent Yú 虞 clan of Kuàijī 會稽 (one of many historians and scholars from that lineage). The surviving fragments include brief filial piety narratives, some overlapping with those in the collections of 蕭廣濟 (KR4k0396) and 宋躬 (KR4k0402), suggesting that these compilers drew on a common pool of circulating exempla.
