Chǔguó Xiānxián Zhuàn 楚國先賢傳
Biographies of Former Worthies of Chu anonymous
About the work
Chǔguó Xiānxián Zhuàn 楚國先賢傳 is a jíyìběn reconstruction of a lost regional biographical collection recording “former worthies” (xiānxián 先賢) of the ancient Chǔ 楚 region (roughly modern Húběi and Húnán). The title invokes the Warring States kingdom of Chǔ, but the biographies likely covered Hàn and post-Hàn figures from the central Yangtze region.

Abstract
The Chǔ region had a distinctive cultural identity dating to the Warring States period, with its own poetic tradition (the Chǔcí 楚辭), religious practices, and scholarly lineages. The Chǔguó Xiānxián Zhuàn celebrated this regional heritage through biographies of local worthies. The surviving fragments, about 220 lines, include notices on Chǔ-region officials and scholars recognized for their conduct, learning, or service. The text was lost after the Táng.
