Abstract

The yòutóng zhuàn 幼童傳 genre is related to the Shìshuō Xīnyǔ 世說新語 culture of recording children’s wit and early promise. In the Wei-Jin period, precocious children (sometimes as young as five or six suì) who displayed adult-like wisdom, literary skill, or moral discernment were celebrated as portents of future greatness. The surviving fragments record tales of children who solved difficult problems, delivered impromptu verses, displayed filial piety beyond their years, or astounded adults with their quick understanding. The fragments were recovered from Táng and Sòng citations; the text was lost after the Táng.
