Abstract

The evening xíngdào closes the day’s three-fold turning of the scripture and includes the most elaborate huíxiàng 迴向 of the cycle — the formal redirection of the merit accumulated through the day’s recitation of the Dùrén jīng toward the cosmic salvation of all sentient beings, the qīzǔ 七祖 (seven generations of patrilineal ancestors), the zǔxiān 祖先 (ancestors more broadly), and the protection of the realm. Schipper & Verellen (Taoist Canon 2: 996–997, John Lagerwey) note that the recitation framework here makes the xuánlíng set the central liturgical mechanism by which the Jīnlù fast actualises the salvific power of its core scripture.

The textual position of the xuánlíng zhuǎnjīng triad in the Zhèngtǒng dàozàng, immediately after the original Dù Guāngtíng Jīnlù (DZ 484–493) and before the shíhuí dùrén sets (DZ 496, DZ 497), reflects a SòngYuán liturgical accretion in which the recitation-centred Dùrén jīng ritual progressively dominated the Daoist zhāi 齋 service of the late-imperial period.
