Yùlù dàzhāi dìèrrì zǎocháo yí 玉籙大齋第二日早朝儀

Morning-Audience Liturgy of the Second Day of the Great Jade-Register Fast

About the work

Fourth fascicle of the eight-part Yùlù dàzhāi programme (DZ 505 a–h = KR5b0201KR5b0208). The second day’s morning audience opens the central panel of the three-day fast, when the consecration of the altar effected on day 1 issues into the principal zhuǎnjīng 轉經 (scripture-recitation) phase of the rite.

Abstract

The morning rite of day 2 follows the format established on day 1 (KR5b0201): fālú, twenty-four strokes of the fǎgǔ, qǐngchēng fǎwèi, three incense-pinches with their respective dedications. The distinguishing feature of the second-day services is the introduction of the jiǔhuí 九迴 (nine returns) framework — the central liturgical mechanism by which the merit of zhuǎnjīng is “turned” through the nine cosmic regions for the salvation of the dead. The first three huí fall in this morning audience, oriented to the east, south, and west of the lower terraces of yīn-space. The closing dedication redirects the merit to the gūyōu 孤幽 and to the named beneficiary’s deceased kin.
