Língbǎo jìngmíng Tiānshūyuàn dūsī fǎyuàn xūzhī fǎwén 靈寶淨明天樞院都司法院須知法文

Method-Text to Be Known by the Law-Court of the Director-General’s Office of the Língbǎo Jìng-míng Heavenly-Pivot Bureau

About the work

A short single-juǎn ritual handbook concluding the four-text Tiānshūyuàn cluster of Jìngmíng 淨明 manuals (DZ 549 / KR5b0253 – DZ 553). Where the preceding Lìng (KR5b0255) and (KR5b0256) fix the Bureau’s administrative statutes and penal regulations, this manual gives the practical fǎwén 法文 — the methodical text of the rite — by which an officer of the Dūsī internally cultivates his office.

Abstract

The opening section, Tiānshū dūlù xíngchí fǎ 天樞都録行持法 (“Procedure for the Maintenance of the Office, by the Director-Registrar of the Heavenly-Pivot”), declares the bureaucratic ethos of the Bureau: as Tiānménsī yuàn 天門司院, “Court-Office of the Heaven-Gate”, it speaks for Heaven (shàngtiān hóushé 上天喉舌), superintends the seventy-three sub-offices plus the seven lùshì (so “seventy-four offices” qīshísì sī 七十四司), and audits the yīnyáng good-and-evil records of the Three Worlds. The text then turns to the internal-cultivation methods proper: the yǎngshén fǎ 養神法 (sunrise visualisation of the sun’s red qì entering the crown and pairing with the moon’s white qì in the breast to form an inner cinnabar pellet), the bìqì 閉炁 visualisations involving the Western Queen Mother and the Yínhàn 銀漢 (Silver River = Milky Way), and so on.

The text shares with KR5b0254 (DZ 550) the Shàngqīng inner-anatomy vocabulary — níwán 泥丸, jiànggōng 絳宮 — and provides what Schipper & Verellen (Taoist Canon 2: 1092–1093, John Lagerwey) describe as the technical liànjīng 鍊精 underpinning of the Bureau’s executive office. The whole forms one of the most explicit accounts of how a SòngYuán fǎshī 法師 was expected to internalise the celestial bureaucratic role in his own body.
