About the work
The Fó wèi Huángzhúyuán lǎo póluómén shuō xué jīng is a single-fascicle anonymous Chinese translation of a discourse delivered by the Buddha to an aged brahmin of Verañjā 鞞蘭若 in the Yellow-Bamboo Park (黃竹園 = Naḷavanapāda?), on the proper conduct of the religious life. The Chinese parallel is T26[157] (the Huángzhúyuán wúshì jīng 黃竹園無事經 of the Madhyama-āgama).
The text opens at the Yellow-Bamboo Park at Verañjā, where an aged brahmin “approaching the next world, of one hundred years of age” comes to seek the Buddha’s instruction. The body of the discourse is the systematic exposition of the path of practice.
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the catalogue rubric printed at the head: 「失譯人名今附宋錄」 — “translator’s name lost; here attached to the [Liú-]Sòng catalogue.”
Abstract
The LiúSòng (420–479) ascription is a catalog-tradition assignment. The defensible bracket for the Chinese version is therefore 420–479 CE, recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost.
