About the work
The Yìngfǎ jīng is a single-fascicle Western Jìn 西晉 translation of a discourse on the four kinds of person — those whose practice conforms to the Dharma in their conduct but not in their reward, those who do not conform in conduct but do receive Dharma-reward, those who do neither, and those who do both. The Chinese parallel is T26[175] (the Shòufǎ jīng 受法經 of the Madhyama-āgama).
The text opens at the Kuru country, “in the seat of the Kurus’ law-court” (拘類法治處 — the standard Western-Jìn rendering of Kammāsadhamma in the Kuru country), with the Buddha addressing the monks.
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Western-Jìn translator’s signature at the head: 「西晉三藏竺法護譯」.
Abstract
T83 was produced during Dharmarakṣa’s Western Jìn career (266–313 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost.
