Fó shuō sānzhuǎn fǎlún jīng 佛說三轉法輪經

Sūtra of the Three Turnings of the Dharma-Wheel (the Dhammacakkappavattana-sūtra; parallel to Saṃyukta-āgama sūtra 379, and to T109) by 義淨 (Yìjìng, 譯)

About the work

The Fó shuō sān-zhuǎn fǎ-lún jīng is a single-fascicle Táng-period 唐 translation of the First Sermon, focusing on its analytical structure as the three turnings (parijñā / prahāṇa / sākṣātkaraṇa) of the four noble truths — twelve elements in all (3 × 4). It is a parallel of T109 (An Shigao). The Chinese title 三轉 (“three turnings”) preserves the Mūlasarvāstivāda-tradition’s analytical articulation more clearly than the older T109.

Prefaces

The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Táng-period translator’s signature at the head: 「三藏法師義淨奉制譯」.

Abstract

T110 was produced during Yìjìng’s post-695 translation career; the defensible bracket 695–713 is recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost. The text is one of Yìjìng’s many short Mūlasarvāstivāda-Vinaya-affiliated sūtras and shows the classical post-Xuánzàng Tang Buddhist register.
