Fó shuō Yāngjuéjì jīng 佛說鴦崛髻經

Sūtra of Aṅgulimāla (alternative form of Aṅgulimāla’s name; parallel to T118 / T120) by 法炬 (Fǎjù, 譯)

About the work

A single-fascicle Western Jìn 西晉 translation of the Aṅgulimāla-sūtra, doublet of T118. The Chinese title 鴦崛髻 Yāngjuéjì is an alternative phonetic transcription of Aṅgulimāla differing slightly from the form 鴦掘摩 used in T118.

Prefaces

The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Western-Jìn translator’s signature at the head: 「西晉沙門法炬譯」.

Abstract

T119 was produced during Fǎjù’s Western Jìn translation period (290–311 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost. The relationship to T118 (Dharmarakṣa) is closely parallel: the two translations are nearly contemporaneous (T118 c. 266–313, T119 c. 290–311) and may render the same Indic Vorlage from different angles.
