Sūtra of King Pasenadi’s Self-Defilement at His Mother’s Death (parallel to Saṃyukta-āgama sūtra 1227, T100 sūtra 54, Ekottara-āgama 26.7) by 法炬 (Fǎjù, 譯)
About the work
A single-fascicle Western Jìn 西晉 translation of a short narrative on King Pasenadi’s grief at his mother’s death, in which (in his despair) he covers himself with dust before approaching the Buddha for consolation. The Buddha’s response is the canonical teaching that all beings are subject to death. The Chinese parallels are T99[1227], T100[54] and T125[26.7].
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Western-Jìn translator’s signature at the head: 「西晉沙門法炬譯」.
Abstract
T122 was produced during Fǎjù’s Western Jìn translation period (290–311 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost.
