About the work
A single-fascicle Western Jìn translation by Bó Fǎzǔ of the canonical narrative of the parinirvāṇa of Mahāprajāpatī Gautamī 大愛道 — the Buddha’s foster-mother and foundress of the bhikkhunī sangha. The Chinese parallels are T125[52.1] and T149 (Huìjiǎn). The Pāli parallel is in Apadāna and the Therīgāthā commentary tradition.
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the Western-Jìn translator’s signature at the head: 「西晉河內沙門白法祖譯」.
Abstract
T148 was produced during Bó Fǎzǔ’s Western Jìn career (290–305 CE; cf. KR6a0005), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost. T148 is, alongside T5, one of only a handful of texts securely attributable to Bó Fǎzǔ.
