Sūtra of the Nine Untimely Deaths by 安世高 (Ān Shìgāo, 譯)
About the work
A single-fascicle Eastern Hàn translation of a discourse on the nine untimely deaths (橫死) — the death of those who eat what should not be eaten, who eat without restraint, who eat what disagrees with them, etc. — i.e., causes of death before one’s allotted lifespan is exhausted. The text is bound with T154 in the Taishō (T150A and T150B).
Prefaces
The text bears no preface or postface. The only paratext is the canonical translator’s signature at the head: 「後漢安息國三藏安世高譯」.
Abstract
T155 was produced during Ān Shìgāo’s Luòyáng period (148–170 CE), recorded in the frontmatter. The Indic source is presumed lost.
