Qúnniú pì jīng 群牛譬經

Sūtra of the Cattle-Herd Parable by 法炬 (Fǎjù, 譯)

About the work

A short single-fascicle pìyù using the parable of a herd of cattle (qúnniú) — and a wolf among them — to illustrate the conduct of a bhikṣu among the deluded. Set as a Buddha-discourse at Jetavana. Translated by 法炬 Fǎjù in the Western Jìn. Signature: 「西晉沙門法炬譯」.

Abstract

T215 belongs to Fǎjù’s documented Western-Jìn activity (290–307). The Indic source corresponds to a Saṃyutta-āgama-class short discourse in upamā (parable) form. The cattle-herd-and-wolf simile is paralleled in the Pāli Saṃyutta-Nikāya and in the Theragāthā.
