Sūtra of the Bodhisattva Mañju-mūrdhan’s Supreme Pure Alms-Round by 翔公 (Xiánggōng, 譯)

About the work

A two-fascicle Liú-Sòng translation of a Mañjuśrī-class Mahāyāna prajñā-sūtra in paripṛcchā-form, framed as a discussion of the bodhisattva’s pure alms-round (分衛 = piṇḍapāta). Translated by Xiánggōng 翔公 in the Nánhǎi 南海 commandery. Signature: 「宋沙門翔公於南海郡譯」. The text bears an alternative title: 「一名決了諸法如幻化三昧經」 (“alternatively named the Sūtra of the Samādhi of Determining-That-All-Dharmas-Are-Like-Magical-Illusions”). The Taishō header cross-references [KR6c0001|T220]玄奘 Xuánzàng’s later integration as the eighth huì.

Abstract

T234 is the Chinese translation of the Nāga-śrī-paripṛcchā — also known as the Mañjuśrī-bodhisattva-paripṛcchā / Mañjumūrdhan-paripṛcchā — a prajñā-class sūtra in paripṛcchā-form. The Indic title’s Nāga-śrī / Mañju-mūrdhan corresponds to the Chinese 濡首 (Rǔshǒu “moist-head” — possibly a calque-mistranslation of Mañju-mūrdhan “tender-head”). The sūtra is doctrinally a Mañjuśrī-cult prajñā text, integrating the alms-round practice with the prajñāpāramitā-doctrine of the illusory nature of all dharmas. The translation is dateable to Xiánggōng’s documented Liú-Sòng activity (420–479).
