About the work
A two-juan Sòng Tiāntái-school synthesizing commentary on the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra, by Shànyuè 善月 (1149–1241, zì Guāngyuǎn 光遠, sobriquet Bǎisōng 柏松), a leading late-Sòng Tiāntái master at the Yánqìngsì 演慶寺 in Sìmíng 四明 (modern Níngbō). The work is a “combined explanation” (huìjiě 會解) — synthesizing previous Tiāntái-school Vajracchedikā commentary (cf. KR6c0037 of 智顗 Zhìyǐ) with Sòng-period developments. Preserved at X24 no. 462. notBefore = 1196 (Shànyuè’s mature scholarly period); notAfter = 1241 (Shànyuè’s death).
Abstract
Shànyuè 善月 was a senior Sòng Tiāntái master active in the Tiāntái-school’s late-Sòng Sìmíng pài 四明派 — the dominant Sòng-period Tiāntái lineage descending from 知禮 Sìmíng Zhīlǐ (960–1028).
