A two-juan mid-to-late Qīng Vajracchedikā commentary by the layman Chén Cúnwú (本名 Yùpiān 玉篇; sobriquet Báiyún shānrén 白雲山人) of Gǔ-Mǐn 古閩 (Fújiàn). The catalog credit-line chǎnshuō 闡說 (“elucidation-discourse”) signals an explanatory-discoursive register — Chén’s stated method is bù shì zǎocí, rénrén kěyǐ jiěshuō 不事藻詞,人人可以解說 (“not pursuing flowery diction, accessible to all to explain”). Self-prefaced 嘉慶二十一年秋七月上浣 = early autumn 1816; reprinted with an additional preface by 洪壽椿 Hóng Shòuchūn of Táiyáng 臺陽 (Taiwan, dated 同治六年丁卯梅夏 = early summer 1867), making it one of the earliest Vajracchedikā commentaries to circulate widely in nineteenth-century Taiwan. notBefore = 1816; notAfter = 1867 (latest editorial layer). Abstract

Chén’s preface (No. 508-A) is a dry critique of contemporary commentarial style: yú guān zhù cǐ jīng zhě, lèi jiē gāotán xuánmiào, chěng qí cífēng, bù gù jīngwén zhī shàngxià qiánhòu, wǎngwǎng zìxiāng máodùn 余觀註此經者,類皆高談元妙,騁其辭鋒,不顧經文之上下前後,往往自相矛盾 (“I have observed that those who annotate this sūtra all run on about subtle wonders, brandishing their rhetorical edge, without regard to the sūtra’s sequence and context — often contradicting themselves”); his project is to “select what is plain and clear” and “supply the section-and-meaning context” (於經之段落意旨所在). The body of the commentary is therefore deliberately sober and structural, arranging the sūtra under a clean section-frame and supplying short prose explanation focused on the sūtra’s coordinated argument. The work is a useful late-Qīng exemplar of accessible scholarly commentary aimed at moderate-trained readers.
