About the work
A two-juan late-Qīng (Dàoguāng / Xiánfēng-era) Vajracchedikā commentary by the layman Xú Huáitíng (born 1800; zì Yúnhè 雲鶴, sobriquets Lèjìng jūshì 樂淨居士 / Jìngrú jūshì 淨如居士). The text bears a paratext by 黃樂之 Huáng Lèzhī (a Fó dìzǐ) dated 咸豐八年戊午秋八月 = autumn 1858, fixing the work’s effective publication. notBefore set to 1840 (Xú’s mature lay-Buddhist period; ~age 40); notAfter = 1858. Preserved as X25 no. 509. Catalog dynasty 清.
Abstract
The opening paratext (No. 509-A) — Huáng Lèzhī’s verse benediction — presents the Vajracchedikā as a devotional-protective text: fófǎ wúbiān, réntiān guījìng; wǔyùn jiē kōng, liùgēn qīngjìng; miàodiǎn cháng cún, qiánchí bì yìng; kǔhǎi nán yú, shén fú zì dìng; zāi jié wú yōu, wéi cāo běnxìng; kǒu sòng bù lí, qūxié quèbìng 佛法無邊,人天歸敬,五蘊皆空,六根清淨,妙典常存,虔持必應,苦海難逾,神扶自定,灾劫無憂,惟操本性,口誦不離,驅邪却病 (“Buddha-dharma boundless, gods and men return in reverence; five aggregates all empty, six sense-organs purified; the subtle classic ever subsists, sincere upholding will surely respond; suffering-sea hard to cross, divine support self-establishes; calamity and kalpa without worry, only by guarding original nature; recitation never departing, exorcising deviance and warding off disease”). The body of the commentary follows the conventional verse-by-verse format with explanatory glosses; the doctrinal register is broadly devotional-Pure-Land-flavored, in keeping with Xú’s sobriquets Lèjìng (“Joy-Pure”) and Jìngrú (“Pure-Thusness”).
