About the work
A one-fascicle Qīng-era Heart Sūtra commentary by Bótíng 續法 Xùfǎ (1641–1728), companion to his Shì-guān jiě (X559 = KR6c0178). Preserved in the Wàn xù-zàng / Manji zoku-zō as X560. Note: the file content opens at fascicle 2 of a multi-fascicle structure; the catalog records it as 1 juàn extent, but the witness has internal fascicle organisation. One fascicle.
The catalog’s title 般若心經理性解 (“Principle-Nature Explication”) and the witness’s preface designation 理解 lǐ-jiě (“principle explication”) both refer to the same paired methodology: this is the lǐ-guān (principle-contemplation) member of Xùfǎ’s shì-guān / lǐ-guān paired Heart Sūtra commentaries.
Prefaces
The opening preface (No. 560-A) is one of the most polished pieces of early-Qīng Buddhist literary writing. Each phrase is a parallel-prose couplet articulating an identity-with-difference between the Heart Sūtra and contemplative experience:
- 「觀音即我人。我人即觀音。不二法也。」 — “Avalokiteśvara is precisely self-and-others; self-and-others is precisely Avalokiteśvara — the non-dual dharma.”
- 「心經即自性。自性即心經。實一道也。」 — “The Heart Sūtra is precisely self-nature; self-nature is precisely the Heart Sūtra — truly one Way.”
- 「般若心。蜜多心。該因徹果。」 — “The Prajñā mind, the Pāramitā mind, encompass the cause and penetrate the fruit.”
- 「五蘊空。諸法空。越聖超凡。」 — “The five aggregates are empty, all dharmas are empty, transcending saint and surpassing ordinary.”
- 「空不異色。相作之用隨緣。」 — “Emptiness not different from form — the function of characteristics-arising follows conditions.”
- 「色即是空。一真之體不變。」 — “Form precisely is emptiness — the substance of one true does not change.”
The preface continues with a parallel-couplet treatment of the entire structure of the Heart Sūtra in this non-dual register, climaxing in: 「故今釋經。並稱理解。觀音。表心王。舍利。表心所。五蘊。宗法相。界處。宗法性。依教觀心。」 — “Therefore now in explicating the sūtra, I jointly designate it principle explication. Avalokiteśvara represents the mind-king (citta); Śāriputra represents the mind-functions (caitasika); the five aggregates derive from dharma-characteristics (dharma-lakṣaṇa); the elements and entrances derive from dharma-nature (dharma-dhātu) — contemplating mind through doctrine.”
This is a remarkably integrated programme: each item of the Heart Sūtra’s vocabulary is mapped to a specific position in the Yogācāra-and-Huáyán doctrinal grid, producing a lǐ-guān (principle contemplation) reading that is doctrinally substantial and contemplatively coherent.
Abstract
X560 is the lǐ-guān (principle-contemplation) member of Xùfǎ’s paired Heart Sūtra commentary, complementing the shì-guān (phenomenal-contemplation) reading in X559. Together the pair constitutes the most ambitious Heart Sūtra commentary project of the Qīng period and one of the most sustained applications of the Huáyán shì-lǐ (phenomenon-principle) methodology to a sūtra outside the Huáyán-corpus proper.
Doctrinally Xùfǎ’s lǐ-guān reading deploys the full Yogācāra-and-Huáyán technical apparatus: citta-king (心王) and caitasika (心所) for the persons of the sūtra; dharma-lakṣaṇa (法相) and dharma-dhātu (法性) for the doctrinal categories. The result is one of the most systematic doctrinal readings of the Heart Sūtra in the entire commentarial tradition.
For the wider history of Heart Sūtra commentary, the X559+X560 pair represents the early-Qīng Huáyán revival’s most ambitious commentary project on the Hṛdaya, and a major node in the long Chinese tradition of using the Heart Sūtra as a vehicle for systematic doctrinal exposition.

Other points of interest
The mapping of Avalokiteśvara to the citta-king (心王) and Śāriputra to the caitasika (心所) — the active mind and its functions — is one of the cleverer Huáyán-Yogācāra hermeneutical moves in the late-imperial commentarial tradition. It transforms the Heart Sūtra’s narrative frame (Avalokiteśvara teaching Śāriputra) into an internal contemplative drama in which the mind-king instructs its own mind-functions — a genuinely ingenious doctrinal-allegorical reading that authorises a thoroughly contemplative-internal use of the sūtra.
The pair X559 (shì-guān) + X560 (lǐ-guān) by the same hand is the most thoroughgoing Huáyán-style paired commentary in the Heart Sūtra tradition, structurally analogous to but more ambitious than 弘贊 Hóngzàn’s X553+X554 pair (KR6c0172, KR6c0173) and 智圓 Zhìyuán’s X529+X530 pair (KR6c0148, KR6c0149).
