About the work
A four-juan compilation of administrative-historical records from the Tiāntáishān Guóqīngsì 國清寺 (the principal Tiāntái monastery established by Zhìyǐ at Tiāntáishān), compiled by Guàndǐng 灌頂 (561–632). The work is the principal documentary source for the institutional history of the early Tiāntái establishment and contains essential biographical, administrative, and ritual materials.
Prefaces
The text opens with the Guóqīng bǎilù xù 國清百錄序 by Guàndǐng. The preface narrates the textual situation: “The deceased master [Zhìyǐ] in Chén Tàijiàn 7, the year yǐwèi [= 575], first hid himself at Tiāntái. The peak where he stayed was anciently named Fólǒng [Buddha-Mound]. Inquiring of the local people, [they said] ‘those who roam this mountain often see the Buddha-image; therefore [it] became known as such.’ Reaching Tàijiàn 10, the wùxū year [= 578], imperial command from Chén Xuāndì named [it] Xiūchánsì [Cultivation-of-Meditation Monastery]. The Department-of-Personnel Senior-Minister Máo Xǐ…”
Abstract
The Guóqīng bǎilù contains administrative-historical materials documenting the early Tiāntái establishment, including imperial edicts, monastic correspondence, ritual texts, and biographical records. It is the principal documentary source for the modern reconstruction of the early Tiāntái institutional history and for the relationship between the Tiāntái establishment and the imperial Suí court under Wéndì 文帝 and Yángdì 煬帝.
The composition is dated to Guàndǐng’s productive period after Zhìyǐ’s death (597) and before his own death (632).
