About the work
A single-juan Northern-Sòng commemorative liturgy by Zūnshì 遵式 (964–1032) for the periodic monastic commemoration of 智顗 Zhìyǐ (538–597), the founding patriarch of the Tiāntái school. The work belongs to the broader Tiāntái institutional commemorative tradition that developed around the school’s founding figure.
Abstract
The Zhāijì lǐzàn wén provides the standard Sòng-period Tiāntái liturgical material for the zhāijì 齋忌 (fast-day commemoration) services held annually on the anniversary of Zhìyǐ’s death. The composition is bracketed within Zūnshì’s productive period at Tiānzhúsì in Hángzhōu, c. 996–1032.
