Tiāntáizōng wèijué (fù shìyí) 天台宗未決(附釋疑)

Unresolved Questions of the Tiāntái School (with Interpretive Resolutions) questions by 源信 (Genshin / Yuánxìn / Eshin Sōzu, 疑問); resolutions by 知禮 (Zhīlǐ / Sìmíng Zhīlǐ, 決答)

About the work

A six-juan documentary record of the Sòng-Heian Tiāntái scholastic exchange between the Japanese Tendai master Genshin 源信 (942–1017) and the Northern-Sòng Tiāntái patriarch Sìmíng Zhīlǐ 四明知禮 (知禮, 960–1028). Genshin sent doctrinal questions on contested points of Tiāntái doctrine to China; Zhīlǐ provided the juédá 決答 (“decisive answers”). The work is one of the principal documents of the Heian-Sòng international Tiāntái-Tendai scholastic dialogue.

Catalog correction: the catalog meta lists Zhīlǐ’s dynasty as 唐 (Tang); this is incorrect — Zhīlǐ was a Northern-Sòng figure (960–1028). The corrected dynasty would be 宋.

Abstract

The composition is dated to the period of the Genshin-Zhīlǐ correspondence c. 1000–1017 (Genshin’s productive period before his death).
