Shèngmán jīng shū yì sī chāo 勝鬘經疏義私鈔
The Sub-Commentary’s Private Notes on the Commentary on the Śrīmālā Sūtra by 聖德太子 (Shōtoku Taishi, 疏 / commentary) and 明空 (Míngkōng, 私鈔 / sub-commentary)
About the work
This 6-fascicle composite text combines 聖德太子 Prince Shōtoku’s traditional Shōman gisho (the Japanese imperial commentary on the [[KR6f0045|Śrīmālā-siṃha-nāda-sūtra]]) with the Tang Chinese sub-commentary by 明空 Míngkōng. The work documents the early Sino-Japanese intellectual exchange around the Śrīmālā-tradition.
Prefaces
No formal preface.
Abstract
The composite work spans Shōtoku’s death (622, the terminus post quem for the parent commentary) to the late Tang (the bracket adopted here, 622 – 850). The Tang sub-commentary by Míngkōng provides important comparative material for Sino-Japanese Buddhist commentarial tradition.
The work is preserved in the Manji Xù zàng jīng (X353) collection.
