Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, Fascicles Three and Six (anonymous Dunhuang manuscript commentary)

About the work

The Wéimó jīng shū fascicles 3 and 6 (T2772) preserve fragments of two non-contiguous fascicles of an originally larger Vimalakīrti commentary; only fascicles 3 and 6 survive at Dunhuang. The Taishō header cross-references No. 475 (Kumārajīva’s translation).

Prefaces

The fragments begin mid-fascicle with no preface or colophon. The juxtaposition of fascicles 3 and 6 reflects the accidents of manuscript preservation rather than original textual organization.

Abstract

The non-contiguous preservation of fascicles 3 and 6 suggests this commentary was originally substantial — likely six to ten fascicles — but most of it was lost. The surviving content treats key doctrinal passages of the Vimalakīrti (the chapters in fascicle 3 likely correspond to Mañjuśrī’s questions; fascicle 6 likely to the bùèr fǎmén 不二法門 chapter).

This work is part of the Dunhuang Vimalakīrti commentary cluster (T2768–T2778). The Tang dating is established on paleographic and doctrinal grounds.
