About the work

The Púsà shēngdì jīng (T533) is a one-fascicle Mahāyāna sūtra by Zhī Qiān 支謙 (支謙). Shēngdì 生地 (“place of birth”; Sanskrit jātabhūmi) is the metaphysical doctrine of where bodhisattvas are reborn — into the kuśala-mūla (wholesome roots) of buddha-fields rather than into the mundane realms.

Abstract

A short Mahāyāna text on the bodhisattva’s place of rebirth, articulating the doctrine that bodhisattvas voluntarily take birth in difficult realms to liberate beings. Translation dated to Zhī Qiān’s Wú productive period (222–252 CE).
