About the work

The Biànyì zhǎngzhě zǐ jīng (T544) is a one-fascicle Mahāyāna sūtra translated by the Northern Wèi monk Fǎchǎng 法場 (法場). The protagonist Biànyì 辯意 (“Eloquent-Mind”; Sanskrit Pratibhānamati) is an elder’s son who poses doctrinal questions to the Buddha.

Abstract

A short Mahāyāna text on the bodhisattva path, framed as an elder’s son’s inquiry. Fǎchǎng was active under the Northern Wèi 後魏 (471–499 CE during the Tàihé 太和 era of Xiàowén 孝文); his translation activity is dated to that bracket.
