X375 in two fascicles is the substantive sub-commentary of which X374 (KR6i0369) is the structural outline — a Sòng chāo 鈔 (“transcript-and-explication”) on [[KR6i0365|宗密’s Yúlánpén jīng shū]] (T1792) by the Northern-Sòng monk 遇榮 (honorific Guǎngyǎn dàshī 廣演大師). The title 孝衡 (“filial-piety balance / scale”) signals the work’s principal interpretive theme: that the sūtra and Zōngmì’s commentary should be read as a precision instrument for weighing and balancing the obligations of Buddhist and Confucian filiality.
Abstract
遇榮’s Xiàohéng chāo is one of the four major Sòng sub-commentaries on 宗密’s Yúlánpén jīng shū — alongside [[KR6i0367|元照’s Xīnjì]], [[KR6i0368|普觀’s Huìgǔ tōngjīn jì]], and [[KR6i0371|日新’s Yúyì]]. The Xiàohéng chāo differs from the others in its consistent emphasis on the “balance” (héng 衡) of inner and outer, Buddhist and Confucian, this-world and other-world filiality, working through Zōngmì’s commentary section by section and giving extended attention to Zōngmì’s preface (which is itself the most explicit statement of the syncretic position). The work pairs with its independent outline (KR6i0369 / X374), and was widely transmitted in Sòng and Yuán circulation. 遇榮’s lifedates are not preserved; the working bracket reflects his Northern-Sòng imperial-honorific period, c. 980–1100.
