Dàrì jīng chísòng cìdì yíguǐ 大日經持誦次第儀軌

Sequential Recitation Ritual Manual on the Mahāvairocana-sūtra (translator unknown 失譯)

About the work

An anonymous one-fascicle Garbhadhātu ritual manual covering the sequential recitation procedure (chísòng cìdì 持誦次第) for the Mahāvairocana practice. The text is structured around the Mahāvairocanasūtra’s Chapter 2, the Jìngxíng hùchí pǐn 淨行護持品 (or Zēngyì shǒuhù qīngjìngxíng pǐn 增益守護清淨行品 — Chapter on the Augmenting-Protective Pure-Practice). The opening section is rendered in 4-character verse meter following the Mahāvairocanasūtra style.

Prefaces

The text opens with the chapter heading 淨行護持品 (with the alternative title 亦云增益守護清淨行品第二) and a verse-invocation:

至誠恭敬一心住,五輪投地而作禮,
歸命十方正等覺,三世一切具三身,[...]

No author-attribution colophon survives.

Abstract

The Chísòng cìdì yíguǐ is a sequential ritual manual for the daily Mahāvairocana practice, organising the practice as a structured sequence following the chapter order of the Mahāvairocanasūtra. The work’s verse-form opening — the prostration to the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, with the practitioner taking refuge in the trikāya — establishes the devotional frame; the body of the text gives the mudrā-mantra-visualisation triplets for each ritual step.

The text’s anonymous transmission and its absence from the principal Tang Esoteric translation catalogues suggest a post-Amoghavajra origin (after 774); the conventional dating bracket places it in the late Tang to early Sòng (8th–10th c.).
