Sānshíjuàn jiàowáng jīng wén cìdì 三十卷教王經文次第

Sequence-of-Passages of the Thirty-Fascicle Teaching-King Sūtra (Jp. Sanjikkan kyōōgyō mon shidai) by 杲寶 (Gōhō, 撰)

About the work

A two-fascicle reference compendium by the Japanese Shingon scholastic master Gōhō 杲寶 (杲寶, 1306–1362) on the 30-fascicle Sòng translation of the Vajraśekhara-sūtra by Dānapāla (KR6j0049, T18n0882). The work gives a sequential index — wén cìdì “sequence of passages” — of the textual content of T882, fascicle by fascicle, with topical headings.

Abstract

Gōhō’s Wén cìdì is a working scholarly reference: a topic-organised index to the 30-fascicle Sarvatathāgatatattvasaṃgraha translation, designed to facilitate scholarly navigation of the long text. The text was useful to medieval Tō-ji Shingon scholars who needed quick reference access to the Sòng Vajraśekhara recension — the only complete Chinese translation of the Sanskrit text — without having to read through all 30 fascicles sequentially.

The composition dates from Gōhō’s mature scholastic career at Tō-ji (ca. 1330–1362). The work is one of the principal medieval Japanese scholarly references for the Sòng Vajraśekhara.
