A Section from the Teaching of the Vajra-Maṇḍala-Adornment Prajñāpāramitā (Skt. Vajramaṇḍa-alaṃkāra?) by 施護 (Dānapāla, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Sòng-period Esoteric translation by Dānapāla (施護) — a single section (yīfēn 一分) extracted from a longer Vajra-maṇḍala adornment Prajñāpāramitā scripture, integrating the Esoteric vajra-mandala framework with the Prajñāpāramitā doctrinal tradition.

Abstract

The text exemplifies the late-tantric synthesis of Prajñāpāramitā (perfection-of-wisdom) doctrine with Esoteric vajra-mandalic ritual — a synthesis characteristic of the late Indian yoga- and yoga-uttara-tantra literature. The single-section excerpt suggests the longer parent text was not fully translated by the Sòng Institute.

The translation dates from Dānapāla’s career at the Sòng Yìjīngyuàn (982–1017).
