Āchù rúlái niànsòng gòngyǎng fǎ 阿閦如來念誦供養法

Method of Recitation and Offering to Akṣobhya Tathāgata by 不空 (Amoghavajra, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Esoteric ritual manual by Amoghavajra (不空) for the practice of Akṣobhya 阿閦 (the Vajradhātu eastern Buddha — Imperturbable) — the principal deity of the eastern Vajra-family in the Vajradhātu mandala.

Abstract

The text gives the daily-practice manual for a practitioner whose iṣṭa-devatā is Akṣobhya — covering the mudrā-mantra-visualisation triplets for the central Akṣobhya practice, the offering sequences, and the japa of the Akṣobhya mūla-mantra and ancillary mantras. Akṣobhya is associated with the mirror-wisdom (mahā-ādarśa-jñāna / dàyuánjìng zhì 大圓鏡智) and the eastern direction in the Vajradhātu mandala; the practice removes karmic obstructions by purifying the ādāna (storehouse-consciousness).

The composition dates from Amoghavajra’s mature Chángān period (746–774).
