Sūtra of the One-Syllable Buddha-Crown Wheel-King by 菩提流志 Pútíliúzhì (Bodhiruci II, 譯)

About the work

A five-fascicle Esoteric scripture translated by Bodhiruci II (菩提流志) on the One-Syllable Buddha-Crown Wheel-King — companion-translation to Amoghavajra’s later T950 (KR6j0124). The Bodhiruci version is the earlier Táng rendering, predating Amoghavajra by approximately 50 years. The Taishō includes the variant edition annotation 【大→甲考偽】 — indicating that some collateral edition has questioned the authenticity of certain passages in the text.

Abstract

Bodhiruci’s earlier translation of the One-Syllable Buddha-Crown scripture establishes the textual basis on which Amoghavajra’s later T950 builds. The two parallel translations document the development of the Táng Esoteric Buddhoṣṇīṣa tradition over two generations of master-translators. The translation dates from Bodhiruci’s documented Cháng’ān period (693–727).
