Wǔ fódǐng sānmèi tuóluóní jīng 五佛頂三昧陀羅尼經

Sūtra of the Samādhi-Dhāraṇī of the Five Buddha-Crowns by 菩提流志 Pútíliúzhì (Bodhiruci II, 譯)

About the work

A four-fascicle Esoteric scripture translated by Bodhiruci II (菩提流志) on the Five Buddha-Crowns (wǔ fódǐng 五佛頂) — i.e., the five uṣṇīṣa deities of the Buddha-Crown / Buddhoṣṇīṣa family. The five Buddha-Crowns are typically identified as: (1) White-Parasol Buddha-Crown (Sitātapatra); (2) Victorious Buddha-Crown (Vijaya); (3) Light-Gathering Buddha-Crown (Tejorāśi); (4) Spotlessness Buddha-Crown (Vimaloṣṇīṣa); (5) Released-Sound Buddha-Crown (Vikīrṇoṣṇīṣa). Together they form a heptad-pentad system within the Esoteric uṣṇīṣa literature.

Abstract

The text presents the samādhi-dhāraṇī practice for each of the Five Buddha-Crowns and their integrated mandalic arrangement. The work is one of the earliest Táng Chinese expositions of the systematic Five Buddha-Crowns doctrine. The translation dates from Bodhiruci’s Cháng’ān period (693–727).
