Sūtra of the One-Syllable Heart-Mantra of the Great Dhāraṇī in the Final-Dharma Period by 寶思惟 Bǎosīwéi (Maṇicintana, 譯)
About the work
A one-fascicle Esoteric dhāraṇī scripture translated by Maṇicintana (寶思惟, d. 721). The text presents a One-Syllable Heart-Mantra (yīzì xīnzhòu) for use in the Final-Dharma Period (mòfǎ 末法) — i.e., the eschatological framework of Buddhist temporal-decline doctrine.
Abstract
The text integrates the One-Syllable mantra-tradition with the mòfǎ (Final-Dharma Period) doctrinal framework. The mòfǎ doctrine — that the Buddhist teaching declines through three successive periods (zhèngfǎ True-Dharma, xiàngfǎ Semblance-Dharma, mòfǎ Final-Dharma) until it disappears — establishes a soteriological urgency to which the One-Syllable mantra-practice responds: a powerful, easily-practiced mantra-recitation suited to the degraded times.
The translation dates from Maṇicintana’s documented Cháng’ān period (693–721).
