Sūtra of the Great-Wonderful Vajra Great-Amṛta Kuṇḍalin Flame-Garland Blazing-Buddha-Crown by 達磨栖那 Dámó Qīnà (Dharmasena, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Esoteric scripture translated by Dharmasena (達磨栖那) — a long composite title combining multiple Esoteric deity-epithets: Great-Wonderful Vajra, Great-Amṛta, Kuṇḍalin (the Vajradhātu KuṇḍalīAmṛtakuṇḍalī, one of the wrathful protective deities), Flame-Garland (yànmán, the iconographic-flame aureole), and Blazing-Buddha-Crown.

Abstract

The text integrates several Esoteric protective traditions — the Vajra, Amṛta, Kuṇḍalī, and Buddhoṣṇīṣa iconographies — into a single composite practice. Such composite-deity scriptures are characteristic of late-Táng Esoteric textual production. Dharmasena’s lifedates are unknown; conventional dating places the translation in the late-Táng period (8th–9th c.).
