Huáyán jīng xīn tuóluóní 華嚴經心陀羅尼
Heart-Dhāraṇī of the Avataṃsaka-sūtra [anonymous translator, late Tang]
About the work
A very short anonymous (shīyì 失譯) Esoteric extract from the Avataṃsaka-sūtra presenting the “heart-dhāraṇī” — the most-condensed essential mantra — extracted from the larger sūtra. The translator is unrecorded; it is included in the Taishō Mìjiàobù 密教部 alongside Amoghavajra’s Avataṃsaka-syllabary texts (KR6j0212, KR6j0213) and is conventionally classified as Tang-period.
Abstract
The category of xīn tuóluóní (Skt. hṛdaya-dhāraṇī) — “heart-dhāraṇī” or “essence-dhāraṇī” — refers to the most-distilled mantric formula representing the soteriological essence of a sūtra, often a single Sanskrit syllable or short formula. In Tang Esoteric practice, large Mahāyāna sūtras such as the Avataṃsaka would be paired with xīn tuóluóní extracts as ritual condensations suitable for daily recitation in lieu of the full text. The present Huáyán jīng xīn tuóluóní is one such condensation. The shīyì status, the Esoteric ritual framework, and the conceptual proximity to Amoghavajra’s Avataṃsaka-syllabary work suggests a date in the late-Tang Esoteric milieu (broadly 750–900). Limited external evidence; the bracket is conservative.
